Purpose statement

The University of Melbourne was established in 1853 and is a public-spirited institution that makes distinctive contributions to society in research, learning, teaching and engagement. During the 2013 financial year, the University continued with the roll-out of its four-year plan in pursuit of its Growing Esteem 2010 strategy. The strategy adopts the triple helix as the visual representation of its core activities and articulates the importance of the interplay between research, learning and teaching and external engagement programs. The University's engagement with the wider community via: knowledge partnerships, advancement, international activities and public knowledge programs, ensured the University continued to make significant contributions to intellectual, social and economic life within Australia and internationally.
