Purpose statement

Engineers Without Borders Australia (EWB)'s vision and mission is to ensure technology benefits all via impactful socio-technical engineering practices as a critical enabler of sustainable development overall. - Purpose: Harnessing the potential of engineering to create an equitable reality for the planet and its people. EWB s 2030 Strategy outlines our strategic direction for the period 2020-2030 and is publicly accessible on our website. Our aim is that in 2030 more than 1,000,000 people have equitable access to technology to live well and pursue their aspirations sustainably, as a clear result of our work. To monitor and evaluate our progress towards this 1,000,000 person goal, our Impact Framework measures our progress on five key strategic pillars, backed by a Theory of Change: 1. Education - Engineers in Australia are capable of consistently designing, developing, implementing and enabling technology that benefits all. 2. Our Network - EWB is a network of values-aligned people, institutions and companies who educate, donate, volunteer and advocate for solutions that benefit all. 3. Engineering - The lives of more than 1,000,000 people have been improved through equitable, sustainable and scalable technology. 4. Influence - Engineering is redefined as a socio-technical sector which views delivering work that benefits all people and the planet as achievable and expected. 5. Our Organisation - EWB is an agile, resilient organisation with a talented network of staff and volunteers. Each pillar has 10-year strategic outcomes, broken down into three-year strategic goals and objectives, further broken down into measurement indicators with defined targets. Indicators are reported quarterly to the Board of Directors and reviewed annually to reflect on learnings. EWB is educating future engineers so they are inspired to work towards this and are encouraged to join the profession for the benefit of all people and the planet. We are also educating current engineers to continually develop their skills, knowledge and confidence to engineer equitably & sustainably. EWB engineers real world solutions to address issues keeping people most impacted front and center always. Our methods and practices are measured and shared back to the wider sector. We work with our extended network internationally and in Australia, with industry, with governments, with the academic sector, with other for-purpose organisations and with our community of EWB chapters, alumni and volunteers to share learning, influence, and to drive our belief and practice of sociotechnical engineering through our projects and programs as examples. Today, the EWB community includes thousands of people and dozens of organisations working together to engineer a better world.
