Purpose statement

The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) is an Anglican, co-educational, non-selective day school for students aged 3 to 18 from Pre-Prep to Year 12. Its mission is: The achievement of academic excellence in a caring environment that is founded on Christian belief and behaviour, so that students are equipped to act with wisdom, compassion and justice as faithful stewards of our world . Achievement of outstanding academic results in a safe, caring community is a feature of a TIGS education. Programmes based on the Reggio Emilia philosophy and the International Baccalaureate Organisation (PYP) in the Junior School lay the foundation for outstanding educational outcomes in the Senior School. Learning is individualised through quality in class differentiation as well as specialist programmes for gifted students and support for students with learning difficulties. A dynamic approach to curriculum development provides a stimulating and diverse curriculum. The School provides programmes that stimulate the interest and creativity of students. Extensive co-curricular and extracurricular experience provides an environment that fosters the growth and learning of the whole child. Specialist areas include the Performing Arts, Creative Arts, Sport and Outdoor Education. We expect that a TIGS education will empower our students to succeed as citizens of the 21st Century. The school s accomplishments align with the School's strategic plan, which emphasises academic excellence, student and staff wellbeing, citizenship, and growth in Christian faith. These achievements are vital for the continued growth of our school, particularly as the school focuses on nurturing resilience and academic excellence in the coming years. We expect that a TIGS education will empower our students to succeed as citizens of the 21st Century.

The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) was founded in 1959 through the concerted efforts, vision and energy of the late Bishop Gordon Begbie and a dedicated band of 'founding parents' who firmly believed in the need for a regional Anglican School to be based in the Illawarra. The Illawarra Grammar School Ordinance 1958 established the School on 15 December 1958 and it opened on 3 February 1959 with 28 boys. The Illawarra Grammar School has seen many changes since 28 students first started classes in the Sunday School Hall of St. Mark s Anglican Church back in February 1959. We now have over 900 students from Pre-Prep to Year 12, culminating in the NSW Higher School Certificate and a magnificent campus with world-class facilities. TIGS remains the school of choice for Illawarra parents who want their children to have an excellent education that will develop their potential in a Christian and caring environment. The Strategic Plan provides the framework for the School community that will inform and guide its activities to ensure the continued achievement of the School s Mission and Core Values. The Strategic Plan and Property Masterplan - to be successful, learning in the 21st Century requires a different approach to learning to that when the School was established in 1959. We want to bring our campus into alignment with our approach to teaching and learning to ensure the best outcomes for our students and the best support for our teachers. The School Council has made the decision to embark on a programme of building and campus refurbishment that will take the School into the 21st Century. It will involve the systematic modernisation of the campus. We seek to educate each student to realise their full potential in all of their gifts and abilities and to have effective governance and leadership to ensure that best practice policies are in place, enabling the School to serve its community in a sustainable and responsible way.
